Hindi name derived from the Sanskrit root bŗh, meaning "to enlarge, to swell," hence "the creator." Not to be confused with the Buddhist Brahma whose name was borrowed from Hinduism but whose god has nothing in common with the Hindu god. In Hinduism, Brahma is a member of a Trinity called Trimurti, the other two members being Vishnu "the preserver" and Shiva "the destroyer." Brahma is also called Nabhija "navel-born" and Kanja "water-born."
